Kieran Jacobsen's Security Rants, Raves and Chants
Ballmer Peak
Maz sent me a link to the following web comic. I think we have either given the developers I work with, too much, or too little alcohol.
Vista SP1 RC
I installed the Vista service pack release candidate on Friday night. It looks great, and doesn't appear to have any major issues. Over all it seems to be running well and has improved performance and increased the stability of my system.
Google Crawling
Well as you may, or may not have noticed, my website has disappeared from Google.

So I started troubleshooting:
1. Google has a metatag to stop bots crawling the content of a site. I removed the webpart from the default.master and it appears to have gone.
2. Created a robots.txt, and validated it using the Webmaster tools from Google
3. Created a sitemap, and configured the Webmaster Tools from Google to know about it. Its valid and should work.
4. Checked Permissions and looked for HTTP Errors.
5. It appears the GoogleBot is looking at my site, as the IIS logs are showing hits from it, so its just not putting them in the index.

If anyone can think of any other reason why this site isn't being put into the index etc, I would love to hear from you.
Finally, A Monitor or Two
Well, I got my replacement monitor, only to realise that whilst I had this one working, the other one had a dead pixel.

So I rang Dell, explained to them what happened, and they sent another monitor. On Friday, the next replacement arrived, and this one works perfectly.

So, I have had 4 dell monitors, with only 2 that worked perfectly.

Whilst it was an utter pain to get two working 24" LCD monitors, it was worth it in the end.
My attempts at buying a monitor
So I decided to splurge on some new LCD Monitors, I mean, for the price, 2 24" Dell LCD Monitors were really cheap for 599 each, so what the hell.

Well ordering them was the easy part, so too was paying for them, it was delivery that became an utter nightmare. Dell shipped the monitors and the seperate boxes of cables via StarTrack (www.startrackexpress.com.au), who decided to deliver them on the Friday not the following Monday. As I work full time, I wasn't home, but there were polite enough to inform me I missed the delivery. Just for the record, they do not ring before the delivery.

So On Monday, after not being able to get a confirmation of the time, and after sitting at home waiting patiently (and working), they finally arrived. I unpacked one, it looked alright, but i had to head into work.

On Monday night I unpacked the other monitor, and pluged them both in, and well of course knowing my luck, one is broken. The display processor in one appears to be dead.

So I ring my friend at Dell Gold Technical Support, who tells me he will send another one to me (this time at work), should be there tomorrow HOOORAY!!!!

No, I didnt have a happy ending, they are out
WSUS 3 SP1
I just upgraded my home WSUS 3.0 server to the release candidate of SP1.

The upgrade went really well, no restart required. What's best is the extra product options that you get.
